How it works
Each message is made up, but based on the kinds of scams people in the UK receive every day. Read it as if it had just arrived, then pick the answer that best fits the evidence in front of you:
- Looks legitimate: nothing in what you can see is a warning sign, and nothing it asks you to do is risky.
- Looks suspicious: there are clear warning signs, such as pressure, unexpected payments, odd links or requests for codes.
- Need more information: there's no clear warning sign, but you can't tell from this alone. You'd need to check something first.
You're judging the evidence shown, not proving anything. A screenshot can never prove that a message or website is safe: sender names, logos and even phone numbers can be faked. When in doubt, check using contact details you already know are genuine.
Three habits that help with any message
- Stop. Take a moment before you pay, click, reply or share a code. Real organisations can wait.
- Check another way. Open the organisation's app, type its web address yourself, or call a number you already trust, such as the one on your bank card.
- Report it. Forward scam texts to 7726 and scam emails to report@phishing.gov.uk. If you've lost money, contact your bank straight away.
